Molecules inside circle are adsorbed on stationary phase (-O-Si-O-). Others molecules are free to move. An equilibrium exists between the two states. Blue color indicates solvent phase.

Solvent moves up because of capillary action. Solvent dissolves more of B molecules due to similar nature of polarity by carrying molecules in free state with them.
