Question

What colors are absorbed by the chlorophyll fraction?

What colors are absorbed by the chlorophyll fraction?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The chlorophyll has usually a veyr green brilliant color

this is due to the absorption spectrum of chlorophyll a between at 660 and 420 nm

According to the light spectrum, 660 nm has "red" color to th human eye whereas the 420 shows violet.

Therefore, substances with such range will reflect green and yellow; which is the color we see to the human eye (the ones that are actually being reflected and NOT absorbed)

NOTE: the answer is for "absorbed" therefore choose violet and red

What fraction of the energy emitted from the sun is absorbed by the Earth? Treat the sun like a light bulb 93 million miles away. Also, assume the Earth only absorbs the energy associated with an area of approximately 50 million square miles. (This is roughly the area of a disc with the same radius as the Earth.)

You created a standard curve using chlorophyll a from spirulina rather than leaf extract since it doesn’t contain chlorophyll b, yet were later told chlorophyll b doesn’t fluoresce. What might have happened if you made a standard curve using crudely-purified chlorophyll a from leaf extract? How would it have affected your results and why?

A solution of isolated chlorophyll fluoresces when exposed to purple light (fluorescence means it emits red light and heat energy). Intact plants do not fluoresce when exposed to purple light. Explain. (Hint: think about what happens to the free energy of electrons in chlorophyll when hit by light.)
