The student is now told that the four solids, in no particular order, are barium chloride (BaCl2), sugar (C6H12O6), benzoic acid (C6H5COOH), and potassium bromide (KBr). Assuming that conductivity is correlated to the number of ions in solution, rank the four substances based on how well a 0.20 M solution in water will conduct electricity. Rank from most conductive to least conductive. To rank items as equivalent, overlap them.

Answer #1

As we know that the conductivity is correlated to the number of ions in the solution.

BaCl2 and KBr ate ionic solids. when they are dissolved in water BaCl2 and KBr dissociates completely to give 3 and 2 ions respectively. Sugar (C6H12O6) is a covalent compound. So it will not dissociate in water. On the other hand, benzoic acid (C6H5COOH) is w weak acid and partially dissociates in water.

Hence the order of decreasing number of particles in which the compounds dissociates is:

BaCl2 > KBr > Benzoic acid > Sugar

Hence the order of most conductive to least conductive compounds is:

BaCl2 > KBr > Benzoic acid > Sugar
