Explain why pentane is less soluble in water than isopropyl alcohol. Use drawings

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Pentane is a nonpolar compound whereas isopropyl alcohol is polar compound.

Solubility is based on the concept "like dissolves like"

Non polar compounds are soluble in nonpolar solvents whereas polar compounds are soluble in polar solvents.

Solubility of pentane in water is very low since it can not form H-bonding with water as it doesnt have electronegative atoms like oxygen and nitrogen and so on... But in the case of isopropyl alcohol which can form H- bonding with water as it is shown in the above figure. H-bonding creates partial polar charges which will assit the alcohol to miscible with water.
