Calculate EOCell for the following examples:

a) Fe(s) | Fe2+(0.10 M) | | Cu2+(0.10 M) | Cu(s)

b) F2(g) + 2Cl-(aq) --> 2F-(aq) + Cl2(g)

c) For the combination of a Zn/Zn2+ couple and a Ag|AgCl(s) | Cl-(aq) couple

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Eocell means the standard reduction potenial of cell which is equal to the difference in cathodic reduction potenial minus anodic reduction potential of cell.

a.In this case Eored(Fe2+)=-0.44 and  Eored(Cu2+)=0.16

Thus Eocell= Eored(Cu2+)- Eored(Fe2+)=0.16-(-0.44)=0.6 volts.

b..

Eored(F2)=2.87 volts and  Eored(Cl2)=1.36

thus, Eocell= Eored(F2)-Eored(Cl2)=2.87-1.36=1.51 volts.

c.

Eored(Zn2+)=-0.76 colts and  Eored(Ag/AgCl)=0.22 v

Thus,

, Eocell=Eored(Ag/AgCl)-Eored(Zn2+)=0.22-(-0.76)=0.98 Volts
