Which of the following alcohol is more soluable in water: ethanol, propanol, and butanol. Why?

WHat kinds of structural or physical property make a substance more soluable in water?

Please give plenty of details, Thank You!

Answer #1

answer : Ethanol is more soluble in water

Explanation :

Ethanol :      CH3    -    CH2    - OH

               hydrophobic part    hydrophilic part

Propanol : CH3 - CH2 - CH2    -   OH

                hydrophobic part       hydrophilic part

butanol : CH3 - CH2 - CH2 - CH2    -    OH

             hydrophobic part              hydrophilic part

if hydrophobic part increases, solubility in water decreases.

if carbon chain increases , solubility of alcohols decreases.
