A BOD test was conducted on the unchlorinated effluent of a municipal wastewater treatment plant at 20°C. The wastewater portion added to a 300-mL BOD bottle was 30 mL, and the dissolved oxygen (DO) values listed below were measured using a dissolved-oxygen probe. No seed was added to the bottles. What is the BOD value for each “valid” sample? Valid samples are ones that do not violate the following two rules:

1. DOf is less than 1.0 mg/L (unclear if still an aerobic bottle) and

2. DOi-DOf < 2.0 mg/L (imprecise measurement).

Time (days), DO (mg/L): 0.01,8.7 1.0,7.8 4.0,5.7 6.0,4.9 10.0,3.9 14.0,0.5

1 - sampled just after preparation of sample bottles.

You are tasked with conducting BOD studies for a waste treatment facility and its discharge to a nearby river. You are told that the facility removes 93% of the BOD in total with a discharge rate of 1.0 m3 /s. you sample the receiving water and find that it has a 0.5 mg/L deficit from saturation concentration (saturation is at 9.7 mg/L) and a BOD5 content of 10 mg/L. A wastewater treatment plant with a zero dissolved oxygen, discharges 10,000 m3/d to a small stream. The stream average flow is 0.4 m3/s with a dissolved oxygen level of 8 mg/l and a BOD5 of 2 mg/l. The minimum oxygen demand that must be maintained in the stream is 4 mg/l. Determine the maximum BOD5 that can be discharged if the initial ultimate BOD after the mixing is 8.1 mg/l. The BOD reaction rate is 0.23 d-1.

Problem #3: Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Stream Quality A wastewater treatment plant designed for a community of 45,000 people has a flow of 100 gal/person/day and a BOD5 loading of 0.2 lb/person/day. The upstream characteristics of the receiving waters are: stream flow rate = 20 cfs and BOD5 = 2 mg/L The water quality standards require the in-stream BOD5 to be less than 7 mg/L in this stretch of the river. The minimum BOD removal efficiency that the treatment...

A BOD test is run using 80 mL of treated wastewater mixed with 160 mL of pure water. The initial DO of the mix is 8.0 mg/L. After 5 days, the DO is 4.0 mg/L. After a long period of time, the DO is 2.0 mg/L, and it no longer seems to be dropping. Assume nitrification has been inhibited so the only BOD being measured is carbonaceous. a. What is the five-day BOD of waste wastewater? b. Assuming no nitrification...

At a wastewater-treatment plant FeCl3(s) is added to remove excess phosphate from the effluent. Assume that the reactions that occur are: FeCl3(s) <> Fe3+ + 3Cl- FePO4 <> Fe3+ + PO43- The equilibrium constant for the second reaction is 10-26.4. What concentration of Fe3+ would be needed to maintain the phosphate concentration below the limit of 1 mg/L of P? (Hint: Assume all the P is in the PO43- form so we’re asking for 1 mg/L PO4 3- as P.)...

You have been retained to design a wastewater treatment plant using a conventional activated sludge process for a town of 40,000 people. The industrial flow contribution to the sewer system is 300,000 gallons per day. Effluent discharge standards require effluent BOD5 and total suspended solids concentration of <10 mg/l. Assume the following design criteria are applicable: Domestic sewage flow = 100 gal/cap/day (including I/I) BOD loading = 0.18 lbs/cap/day TSS loading = 0.20 lbs/cap/day BOD removal in primary = 33%...
