An Erlenmeyer flask has a mass of 30.20g empty and 45.50g when completely filled with water (density = 0.998 g/mL at 20C). When 9.40 grams of bronze (a homogenous mixture of tin and copper) is placed in the filled flask, some of the water spills out and the new mass is 52.40g. What is the density of the bronze in kg/m3?
massof water = flask with water - water mass = 45.5-30.2 = 15.3 g
volume of water = mass/ density = 15.3 /0.998 = 15.33 ml = volume of flask
now mass added 9.4 g (from bronze)
new mass = 52.4 g , mass of water = 52.4-9.4 = 43 g
water displaced mass = 45.5-43 = 2.5 g
volume of water displaced = mass / density = 2.5/0.998 = 2.505 ml = volume of solid bronze
now density of bronze = mass/vol = 9.4/2.505 = 3.7525 g /ml = 3.7525 kg/L = 3.7525 x 10^3 kg/m3
= 3752.5 kg/m3
