In the following reaction, how can you tell that the element Fe has undergone oxidation?

5FeCl2 + KMnO4 + 8HCl ---> 5FeCl3 + KCl + MnCl2 + 4H2O

Homework Answers

Answer #1

+2                                        +3

5FeCl2 + KMnO4 + 8HCl 5FeCl3 + KCl + MnCl2 + 4H2O

In the given reaction the oxidation state of Fe in FeCl2 is +2 & that in FeCl3 is +3

On going from reactants to products the oxidation state of Fe increases from +2 to +3.We know that ioncrease in the oxidation state indicates the the reaction is oxidation & the atom that incrases its oxidation state is said to be oxidised.

Therefore Fe has undergone oxidation.
