The basic principle involved in desalination of water is distillation.

When saline water is distilled only water vapour comes out of the saline water and condensation of the vapour produced gives fresh water. However, high cost of this process makes this process econimically less viable.

The most important users of desalinated water are in the western part of Asia covered by desert. The countries are mainly Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain. Among first world countries, California and parts of Florida in the United States use this protocol.
