The mole fraction of any component of a solution is defined as the ratio of number of moles of that component present in the solution to the total number of moles of all the components of the solution.

For a binary solution, if n and n' are the number of moles of solvent and solute repectively present in the solution, then the mole fractions are given by equations

Mole fraction of solvent

Mole fraction of solute

Further the sum of mole fractions of solvent and solute

Hence, sum of mole fractions of all components of solution is always unity. Mole fraction is temperature independent quantity and is unitless.
