The freezing of water at 0⁰C can be represented as follows:

H2O (l) ↔ H2O(s)

The density of liquid water is 1.00 g/cm3. The density of ice is 0.92 g/cm3. In 3 – 4 sentences explain why applying pressure causes ice to melt.

Answer #1

To understand the answer first we should know what happens when water turns to ice. irrgular arrangement of water molecules turns to a reggular 3dimensional tetrahedral arrangement of water molecules(in ice) which makes the molecules to occupy more space compared to water molecules arrangement, called anamolous expansion which makes ice less denser compared to water. So when we apply pressure on to ice means we are trying to make it up less space. one way for ice to take up less space is for it to turn back into water.

Please use text to type out the answer, no pictures please thank you. Consider a model steel bridge that is 1/100 the exact scale of the real bridge that is to be built. If the model bridge weighs 50 N, what will the real bridge weigh? If the model bridge does not appear to sag under its own weight, is this evidence the real bridge, built exactly to scale, will not appear to sag either?
