compute the percentage ionic character of the interatomic bind for each of the following compounds :CaO,SiO2:and BaS

Homework Answers

Answer #1

percentage of ionic character = 16 (XA-XB) + 3.5 (XA-XB)2

XA = element with higher electronegativity

XB = element with lower electronegativity

Electronegativity values

Ca =1 , O = 3.4 , Si = 1.9, Ba = 0.9 , S = 2.6

CaO :

percentage of ionic character = 16 (XA-XB) + 3.5 (XA-XB)2

   = 16 (3.4 -1) + 3.5 ( 3.4 -1)2

= 58.56 %

SiO2 :

percentage of ionic character = 16 (XA-XB) + 3.5 (XA-XB)2

   = 16 (3.4 -1.9) + 3.5 ( 3.4 -1.9)2

= 31.87 %

BaS :

percentage of ionic character = 16 (XA-XB) + 3.5 (XA-XB)2

   = 16 (2.6 -0.9) + 3.5 ( 2.6 -0.9)2

= 37.31 %
