Which of the following combinations of molecules have ion-dipole force between

EN: F 4.0, O 3.5, N 3.0, Cl 3.0, C 2.5, H 2.1)

a.CO and Cu2+

b.CO2 and K+

c.K+ and I-

d.HF and H2O

e. Cl2 and Br2

Answer:A

Please solve this step by step. Let me know if I am suppose to memorize anything. Why are the other options wrong answer? How do you know? What can I do so I can do it?

Ans:- CO and Cu2+ have ion dipole interaction.

An ion-dipole is an attractive fore that exists between an ion (cation or anion) and a nuetral mole that has dipole momemt. these occur between two atoms in a molecule having very different electronegativity.

CO2 and K+ cannot have an ion-dipole interaction because CO2 is not a polar molecule. CO2 have two polar C-O bonds but its geometry is linear.so it tends to nullify the polarity and there is no net dipole moment.

K+ and I- are two ion.so electrostatic fore exsists between the two ions.

HF and H2O are two polar molecules.dipole-dipole interaction exsists between them instead of ion-dipole.

Cl2 and Br2 are two molecules and vanderwaal force exists between them.
