Physical Chemistry Question:

Discuss the reason for plotting ʌeq, the equivalent conductivity, versus ,c^1/2, the squared root of concentration.

Answer #1

A plot of equivalent conductance versus sq.rt. of concentration is valid for all electrolytes. The plot is more commony known as kohlrausch plot. It is a method of determinatiom of equivalent conductance at infinite dilution. In order to obtain a relationship between conductance and concentration the sq.rt of conc. plot gave a linear relationship plot. It was found that for all the electrolytes the equivalent conductance reduced with increasing concentration. This effect was attribted to the clustering of counterions and delay in dissociation at higher concentrations of electrolyte salts added. For weak electrolytes the linear relationship was found at very dilute concentration of salts.

An arsenic (As)-doped silicon (Si) has a conductivity of 2.50 x 10-2 (Ω∙m)-1 at 25°C. The electron mobility of Si is 0.140 m2/(V∙s) and the hole mobility of Si is 0.050 m2/(V∙s). The intrinsic conductivity of Si is 3.40 × 10−4 (Ω∙m)-1 at 25°C. The extrinsic semiconductor’s predominant charge carrier density is approximately __________ times that of the intrinsic semiconductor's predominant charge carrier density.
