Some farmers use ammonia, nh3, as a fertilizer. This ammonia is stored in a liquid form. Use the particulate perspective to show the transition from liquid ammonia to gaseous ammonia

Homework Answers

Answer #1

As we know that NH3 has a boiling point of −33.34 °C at one atmosphere pressure

therefore

above the −33.34 °C temperature at 1 atm , liquid ammonia will be converted to gaseous ammonia

or

at −33.34 °C temperature and less than 1 atm ( < 1 atm ) , liquid ammonia can be converted to gaseous ammonia.

therefore

the conversion of liquid ammonia can be given as :

NH3 (l) ------------------------------> NH3 (g) at T > −33.34 °C and P = 1 atm

or

NH3 (l) ------------------------------> NH3 (g) at T = −33.34 °C and P < 1 atm

1. Liquid (anhydrous) ammonia, NH3(l), with a boiling point of –33 °C, is often used as an alternate solvent to water. It forms strong hydrogen bonds and the polar molecules can solvate ionic compounds. Anhydrous ammonia also undergoes autoionization. Therefore, there can be acidic, neutral, or basic species in solutions of liquid ammonia. a) Write the chemical equation, using the Brønsted‐Lowry perspective, that describes the autoionization of NH3(l). (Hints: for water this equation is 2H2O(l) ⇌ H3O+(aq) + OH–(aq); X(am)...

Liquid ammonia, NH3(l), was once used in home refrigerators as the heat transfer fluid. The specific heat of the liquid is 4.7 J/g.K and that of the vapor is 2.2 J/g.K. The enthalpy of vaporization is 23.33 kJ/mol at the boiling point. If you heat 12 kg of liquid ammonia from -50.0 °C to its boiling point of -33.3 °C, allow it to evaporate, and then continue warming to 0.0 °C, how much heat energy must you supply?

NH3 the most harmful form of ammonia to fish, is toxic to several species at cencentrations as low as 0.2 mg/L. If water discharging into a small river from an agricultural processing system has a total ammonia concentration of 10 mg/L, what maximum pH can be allowed in order to keep the NH3 concentration below 0.2 mg/L ? ( to be conservative assume a zone of no mixing in the receiving stream, which means no dilution of the discharge.)

Kenny Kernel, a corn producer from Wildorado, TX, annually applies 250 lb/acre of anhydrous ammonia (NH3, 82-0-0). The producer decided to switch to liquid urea ammonium nitrate (UAN-28) fertilizer (28-0-0) for the upcoming year because of availability and lower price. If 28-0-0 weighs 10.7 lbs per gallon, how many gallons of 28-0-0/acre must be applied to equal the quantity of N previously added as 82-0-0?

In the manufacture of nitric acid, ammonia and preheated air are mixed to form a gas containing 10 mole% NH3 at 600oC. (The ammonia is not preheated, since if it were, it will decompose to N2 and H2). The mixture is then catalytically oxidized to form NO2, which is absorbed in water to form HNO3. If ammonia enters the gas blending (mixing) unit at 25oC at a rate of 520 kg/h, and heat is lost from the mixer to its...

We use the form y hat = a + bx for the least-squares line. In some computer printouts, the least-squares equation is not given directly. Instead, the value of the constant a is given, and the coefficient b of the explanatory or predictor variable is displayed. Sometimes a is referred to as the constant, and sometimes as the intercept. Data from Climatology Report No. 77-3 of the Department of Atmospheric Science, Colorado State University, showed the following relationship between elevation...
