For the following problems, give answers in the standard notation with the correct number of significant figures.

(1) 300 x 185      (2) 2.10/(5)(15)     (3) 0.886×3.6×6.1   (4) 3.9×0.257 / 8.68×20.0

Homework Answers

Answer #1

(1) 300 x 185

=> 55500

Scientific Notation = 5.55 * 10^(4), since in scientific notation it must be expressed a * 10^(b), where a is a number varying from 0 to 10 and b being a integer

(ii) significant digits in numberator = 3

Significant digits in denominator = 0

Hence the number 2.10/75 = 0.028

Scientific Notaiton = 2.80 * 10^(-2)

(3)

0.886 has 3 decimal places but 3.6 and 6.1 has only one decimal place, hence the final answer will be having only one decimal place

Final answer

=> 19.5

(4)

The numerator has one term with one decimal digit and other term with three decimal places, hence upto 1 decimal place will be considered
