The equilibrium concentrations for the reaction between carbon monoxide and molecular chlorine to form COCl2 (g) at 74oC are [CO] = 0.012 M, [Cl2] = 0.054 M, and [COCl2] = 0.14 M. Calculate Kp.
Solution :-
Balanced reaction equation
CO + Cl2 ---- > COCl2
Lets first calculate the Kc using the give equilibrium concnetrations
Kc= [COCl2] /[CO][Cl2]
Kc= 0.14 / 0.012*0.054
Kc= 216
Now lets calculate kp
Kp = Kc * RT^Delta n
Delta n = coefficient of product - coefficient of reactant
= 1 – (1+1)
= -1
74.0 C +273 = 347 K
Lets put the values in the formula
Kp = 216 * (8.314 J per mol K * 347 K)^-1
Kp = 0.075
So the Kp of the reaction is 0.075.
