A simple binary compound MmXn, is known to have a structure of ccp anions with all of the Td (tetrahedral) holes filled with M cations. What is the empirical formula of this compound?

Using real elements in place of M and X what would be a possible chemical formula for the compound?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

in CCP total 4 atoms present in one unit cell.   so   anions = 4 (X =4)

in any unit cell       tetrahedral holes   = 2 x number of atoms in unit cell

                                              Td holes = 2 x 4 = 8

so total   8 cations present    M = 8

so       M : X = 8 : 4 = 2 : 1

formula =   M2 X1

An empirical formula is the lowest whole number ratio of the elements in a compound and provides information about the composition of a compound. For instance, the compound sodium sulfate decahydrate has the chemical formula Na2SO4•10H2O. This formula conveys the information that there are ten water molecules per two sodium ions per one sulfate ion. You might wonder: “How were these ratios determined?” To answer the question it is necessary to recognize that the ratio of atoms (or ions) is...

Problem 1: Relations among Useful Discrete Probability Distributions. A Bernoulli experiment consists of only one trial with two outcomes (success/failure) with probability of success p. The Bernoulli distribution is P (X = k) = pkq1-k, k=0,1 The sum of n independent Bernoulli trials forms a binomial experiment with parameters n and p. The binomial probability distribution provides a simple, easy-to-compute approximation with reasonable accuracy to hypergeometric distribution with parameters N, M and n when n/N is less than or equal...

Chemical Reactions Types and Their Equations Making Heat with Chemical Reactions Have you ever wondered how an instant heat pack works? A disposable heat pack works by a chemical reaction that combines iron in the package with oxygen from the air when the outer packaging is removed producing iron oxide. You have probably seen the product of this reaction in what is commonly called rust. The reaction releases heat, which allows the pack to reach a sufficient temperature that is...
