For which of the listed elements (E) would the energy required for the following reactions be the least ? E(g) -->E+ (g) +e- ( I know it is K, but why, please explain) a) Ga b) Na c) Ca d) K

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The energy required to remove electron from outermost shell (valence electron) of an isolated gaseous atom is called ionzation energy.

Ionization energy increases from left to right across a row and decreased from top to bottom in a group of the periodic table. This is because valence electrons experience by nuclear charge increases from left to right in a row and decreases from top to bottom in a group.

Given elements, Sodium (Na) is a third row and I group element.

Potasium (K) is a third row and 1 group element.

Calcium (Ca) is a third row and 2 group element.

Gallium (GaO is a third row and 13 group element.

So, the potassium (K) has the least ionizatin energy.
