Calculate the ATP production of 6:0 fatty acid. Can fatty acid catabolism occur without oxygen?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

catabolism wont occur without oxygen

the ATP production of 6:0 fatty acid ( caproic acid )

in beta oxidation 2 FADH2 , 2 NADH molecules

Citric acid cycle:
(3 turns; once for each 2-carbon fragment)
- 3 FADH2 (1FADH2 per turn, 3 turns=3)
- 9 NADH (3 NADH per turn, 3 turns=9)
- 3 GTP (1GTP per turn, 3 turns=3)
Total:
- 5 FADH2
-11 NADH
- 3 GTP

The NADH, FADH2, and GTP undergo oxidative phosphorylation in the electron transport chain
to yield:
2.5 ATP molecules per NADH
1.5 ATP molecules per FADH2
1.0 ATP molecule per GTP

Thus, 38 ATP molecules are synthesized without undergoing ETC .

You have discovered an organism that has a fatty acid synthase system that makes arachidic acid (a 20 carbon fully saturated fatty acid) instead of palmitic acid as most cells do. Assume that the pathway is the same (except that the synthase stops at 20 carbons instead of 16 carbons). The energy of combustion of glucose is about -2805 kJ/mole, and the energy of combustion of arachidic acid is about -12,600 kJ/mole. The molecular weight of glucose is 180 g/mole...
