Determine if HNO3 can dissolve each of the following metal samples.
1) Write a balanced chemical reaction showing how the 4.14 g Sn dissolves in HNO3.
2) Determine the minimum volume of 5.1 M HNO3 required to completely dissolve the sample.
1. Sn(s) +2 HNO3(aq) -----------> Sn(NO3)2(aq) + H2(g)
no of moles of Sn = W/G.A.Wt
= 4.14/118.7 = 0.035 moles
from balanced equation
1 mole of Sn react with 2 moles of HNO3
0.035 moles of Sn react with = 2*0.035/1 = 0.07 moles of HNO3
no of moles of HNO3 = molarity * volume in L
0.07 = 5.1* volume in L
volume in L = 0.07/5.1 = 0.0137 L = 13.7ml >>>answer
