A balloon will burst at a volume of 2.96 L. If it is partially filled at 18.2°C and 76 cm Hg to occupy 1.31 L, at what temperature will it burst if the pressure is exactly 1 atm at the time that it breaks?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

for the ballon to break the volume has to reach 2.96L

from gas law for a given mass of gas    PV/T= constant or

P1V1/T1= P2V2/T2 , where P1, V1,T1 are initial conditions of Pressure, Volume and temperature, P2, V2 and T2 are final conditions of pressure, volume and temperature.

given P1= 76 cm Hg= 1 atm, P2= 1 atm, V1= 1.31 L, T1= 18.2deg.c= 18.2+273= 291.2K

V2= 2.96L, T2= P2V2T1/P1V1= 1*2.96*291.2/(1*1.31)= 658K= 658-273= 385 deg.c

So the ballon bursts when the temperature reached 385 deg.c
