Chlorine dioxide (ClO2), used as a disinfectant for water treatment, can be produced by the reaction shown below:

2 NaClO2 (aq) + Cl2 (g)  2 ClO2 (g) + 2 NaCl (aq) Calculate E and G for production of ClO2

Homework Answers

Answer #1

2 NaClO2 (aq) + Cl2 (g) ---> 2 ClO2 (g) + 2 NaCl (aq)

ClO2(aq) + e- --> ClO2^- E° = 0.954 V (anode)

Cl2(g) + 2 e−    ---> 2 Cl−   E0 = +1.36 v (cathode)

E0cell = Ec - Ea

        = 1.36-0.954

        = 0.406 v

DG0 = - nFE0cell

      = -2*96500*0.406

      = -78358 joule

DG0 = -RTlnKeq

-78358 = -8.314*298lnk

k = 5.44*10^13
