A treatment for methanol poisoning is to have the victim drink large amounts of ethanol. Why might this be an effective treatment?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

methanol + enzyme (alcoholdehydrogenase) ----> formic acid + formaldehyde

formic acid , formaldehyde both are toxic.

ethanol + enzyme (alcoholdehydrogenase) ----> acetic acid + acetaldehyde

acetic acid , acetaldehyde both are less toxic compared to above.

Since ethanol has got higher affinity to enzyme alcoholdehydrogenase than methanol.

it reacts to form acetic acid and acetaldehyde( less toxic) allowing methanol to be excreted via urine.

A) Woud N-1,5-dimethylhexylformamide be an effective alternative for the treatment of methanol and ethylene glycol poisoning, assuming that it is non-toxic itself (and as an alternative to getting the patient drunk)? Would N-1,5-dimethylhexylformamide be effective even if the concentrations of methanol or ethylene glycol were very high? (Hint: Compare the values of KI and KI' whichever is appropriate and Km). A teenager drank ethanol laced with methanol, a poisonous alcohol. Was rushed to a hospital, the physician pumps his stomach and ask the teenager to drink vodka (40% ethanol) for another 24h. The nurse asks her, why she did that? The Dr. replies, liver alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) makes methanol a poison, but its Km with ADH is 10mM, while the Km for ethanol is 1mM. The nurse asks, “what about the k2? The Dr. says, I made it irrelevant. Explain...

Ethanol and methanol form a nearly ideal solution. (a) First of all, why is this expected? (b) At 20 °C, the vapor pressure of ethanol is 5.93 kPa, and that of methanol is 11.83 kPa. Calculate the mole fractions of the two components if 100 g of each are mixed. (c) Calculate the partial pressures and the total vapor pressure of the solution. (d) Calculate the mole fraction of methanol in the vapor.

A study extracted rosemary with three different solvents, methanol, ethanol, and acetone. These extracts were then tested for their content of phenolic compounds. These extracts were found to have 150, 117, and 97 mg gallic acid equivalents/g extract. Why do you think that they contained different levels of phenolics, and why would it matter, if the ultimate goal is to use the rosemary extract to protect oils against lipid oxidation?
