Which molecule has the strongest carbon-oxygen bond? I know the answer is CO, im looking for an explanation of why that answer is correct.

CO32-    HCO3

CH2O    CO2    CO

Answer #1

As mentioned CO has the stronger C-O bond.

First let us understand the following. The shorter the distance between the molecules, stronger the bond. Adouble bond is shorter than a single bond. This means a double bond is stronger than a single bond. It is not necessary that it has to be double as strong as the energy in pi is less than a sigma bond. A triple bond is stronger than a double bond. Hence when we compare the double bonds in CO2 to the triple bonds in the CO molecule, the triple bond is stronger.

The two nuclei in the carbon monoxide (CO) molecule are 0.1128nm apart. The mass of the carbon atom is 1.993x10-26kg and the mass of the oxygen atom 2.656x10-26kg. Because the two atoms have different masses, the center of gravity of the molecule is NOT half-way between the atoms. 1.
