Explain how the purification of an eutectic mixture is done using recrystallization?

Explain how the purification of an eutectic mixture is done using recrystallization?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

In eutectic mixture the melting point of the constituents is same and thus we cannot apply simple purification methods like distillation . To solve this problem we use the process of recrystallization in this we choose a solvent such that our compound (which is to be purified ) does not dissolves in it and the impurity does .

We then take the eutectic mixture and evaporate it's solvent to get a solid (product + impurity) . After this we add the solvent which dissolves only the impurity and not the product. We then filter the solution we have now pure product separated out and impurities goes to the solution ( filtrate).

Why does recrystallization of a compound usually result in its purification? A. The growing crystal lattice self-selects for that compound's molecules; impurities remain behind in the solution and are removed by filtration. B. Crystalline compounds are more pure than amorphic compounds by definition. C. Mechanical agitation of the boiling mixture physically separates the solute from its impurities by friction. D. Impurities are chemically destroyed by solvolysis.
