Briefly explain how you would "extract the aqueous layer two times with 5-mL portions of methylene chloride."
Liquid-liquid extraction
Take your aqueous reaction mixture (or aqueous layer containing the compound to be extracted) in a separatory funnel.
Add 5 ml portion of methylene chloride to it. Shake vigorously, and then let it stand for while so that the layers gets separated.
Remove the lower methylnene chloride layer.
Agan add 5 ml of methylene chloride and repeat the process.
Combine the two organic layers and this layer now has compound extracted from aqueous layer into it.
