Which of the following ionic solids would have the largest lattice energy?
A. sodium fluoride
B. strontium oxide
C. cesium iodide
D. barium sulphate
E. calcium fluoride

Homework Answers

Answer #1

answer : B. strontium oxide

explanation:

NaF , SrO , CsI , BaSO4 , CaF2

lattice energy is directly proportional to the charges of the ions and inversly proportional to the radius of atoms

NaF -------> Na+ + F-

SrO ----------> Sr+2 + O-2

CsI ----------> Cs+ + I-

BaSO4 -----------> Ba+2 + SO4-2

CaF2 ----------> Ca+2 + 2F-

among the given BaSO4 and SrO have higher charges. so they should be higher lattice energy . now we have to decide which one is higher.

SrO is higher because Sr size is smaller than Ba . so ultimate answer is SrO
