Explain why ATP is biological currency (what’s so special about ATP as a phosphoryl group donor?)
ATP is considered as biological currency because it is an efficient and relatively easily biosynthesised molecule. ATP is ubiquitous throughout our cells and inter-cellular spaces. The free energy of ATP hydrolysis is large due to weak phosphoanhydride bonds. Now, these weak bonds make ATP good for Phosphoryl Transfer Reactions.
