I would like to ask a question about chemical cell and eletrolysis
When it is the negative eletrode, how can I distinguish that I should write the half equation by seeing the metal eletrode or the solution?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

First of all since it is the negative electrode, it is cathode in case of electrolysis.at cathode always reduction occurs so you have to write reduction equation or reactionsecondly if the electrode is inert like platinum or graphite than consider only solution for electrolysis.but if the electrode is active like that of silver , copper or zinc than compare the reduction potential of the species in solution and of electrode , the more positive the reduction potential the more will be its tendency to get reduce. thus write the chemical equation for the one having more positive reduction potential.

Hello I have a question about organic chemistry 1 lab. When doing chemical tests the Br2 in CCl4. Shows a positive result for alkenes and alkynes? And negative test results mean a alkene and/or arene? I’m told in lab that we do not have potassium permanganate so we cannot use it. The second test that were told to preform if nothing else is shown on the IR is a halide test. I hope this makes sense. I’m just confused about...

In your words describe what an electrolytic cell is. When characterizing redox reactions, why do we use standard cell potentials, and what are they standard to? Are standard cell potentials written in terms of oxidation or reduction? Use your lecture notes to state the half-cell reaction equation that requires 0.15 V of electricity to occur. Using this reduction half-cell reaction equation answer the following question. How much of the metal, in grams, is deposited onto the electrode if 5.842x10-2 C/s...

I posted this question and wanted to re-post it to ask if the answer would change if the city puts the funds at the end of each year. Thanks. City X issues bonds for $45 million for 10 years to raise capital for city operation, how much should the company put in a sinking fund each year at an interest rate of 4% that will repay the debt in 10 years?
