Question

What is the % error if the experiment of H2O in Alum is 42.34%?

What is the % error if the experiment of H2O in Alum is 42.34%?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Experimental H2O in Alum is 42.34% (given)

Calculate theoretical H2O in Alum

Calculate molar mass of alum (KAl(SO4)2.12H2O)

39.098 + 26.982 + 2(32.06) + 20 (15.999) + 24(1.0079) = 474.3696 g/mol

There are 12 molecules of water in alum

Molar mass H2O = (15.999) + 2(1.0079) = 18.0148

There are 12 molecules of water in alum

Mass of water in alum = 18.0148*12 = 216.1776

% H2O = (216.1776/474.3696)*100 = 45.57%

% error = [(Experimental – theoretical) / theoretical] x 100

              = [(42.34 – 45.57)/45.57] x 100 = 7.08 %

7.Aluminum cans can be converted into alum [KAl(SO4)2 · 12 H2O] and hydrogen gas via a very simple procedure summarized by the overall equation given below. Alum is a useful agent in water-proofing and hydrogen gas is a very useful fuel. An aluminum soda pop can with a mass of 19.56 g reacted with an excess of potassium hydroxide. What is the volume at STP of the hydrogen gas produced?

A surface water treatment plant treats a 6,000 L/day flow with alum coagulation, identified by the following stoichiometric reaction: Al2(SO4)3 ∙ 14 H2O + 6HCO3- ↔ 2Al(OH)3 (s) + 6 CO2 + 14 H2O + 3 SO42- Molecular weights (g/mol): Al2(SO4)3 ∙ 14 H2O  =   594.5 HCO3-  =  61 Al(OH)3  =  78 SO42-  =  96.1 Jar tests indicate that 55 mg/L of alum are required to optimally treat the surface water. Removal of approximately 20.2 mg/L of suspended solids also occurs in this sytem. Estimate the mass of...

Alum is a compound used in a variety of applications including cosmetics, water purification, and as a food additive. It can be synthesized from aluminum metal, sulfuric acid, water, and potassium hydroxide, as seen in the following equation: 2Al(g) + 2KOH(aq) + 4H2SO4(aq) + 10H2O =====> 2KAl(SO4) + 12(H2O) = 3H2 Using the data below, determine the percent yield for this alum synthesis. Note that aluminum is the limiting reactant. Bottle Mass - 10.0959 g Bottle with Aluminum Pieces -...
