Why does benzene form a ring?
Type Answer or Dont Bother Answering
Benzene is C6H6 molecular formula. It has 4 degrees of unsaturation. To satisfy this unsaturation the most ideal structure is a cyclohexane ring structure with 3 double bonds in it. Now the 3 unsaturation left can be satisfied in a number of ways, as descirbed by kekule. however the unusual high stability of benzene molecule and the fact that all six C-C bonds have same bond lengths led us to draw benzene ring with three double bonds alternating to each other. The three double bond electrons (pi-electrons) are delocalized and therefore give benzene its extra stability.
