(a) How many theoretical plates produce a chroma- tography peak eluting at 12.83 min with a width at half-height of 8.7 s?

(b) The length of the column is 15.8 cm. Find the plate height.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a)

number of plates = 16 ( peak elutiing / half height )^2

                            = 16 (12.83 / 8.7)^2

                           = 34.8

b) plate height = length / number of plates

                           = 15.8 / 34.8

                          = 0.454 cm

You are now the chemist responsible for describing the efficiency of a newly produced GC column that is 25 meters long. You do this by injecting an aliquot of an octadecane standard into the column and observing its resultant chromatographic output. What type of chromatography are you performing in this experiment? What would you assume the polarity of the mobile and stationary phases are in this efficiency experiment? Why? You find that the retention time for the standard is 8.22...
