BIOCHEMISTRY: How might a defect in a pancreatic β-cell calcium channel affect insulin release when blood glucose levels rise?
Beta-cell which is consist of potassium and calcium ion channel. In general potassium ion channels are open form.
when glucose concentration higher, it will enter into the betacell, then it will metabolised by glcokinese enzyme and it generate ATP.
ATP will helps to closing potassium ion channel, so change the potential difference inside the membrane that is negative because lack of potassium ion.
That effects or stimulate to enter the calcium ions inside the betacell and calcium ions will helps to release insulin outside the cell and maintain the glucose level.
several form of genes are associated with diabetes due to lack of insulin. The factors are like glucotixicity, lipotoxicity and altered peptide harmone likely to play a important role in the defect of betacell.
