is phosphatidylcholine polar, nonpolar, or amphipathic? What about sphingomyelin? Briefly explain why, please.
Phosphatidylcholine are a class of phospholipids that includes choline as a head group .They can be obtained from egg yolk or soyabeans. It consists of water soluble head (+vely charged polar gp) , linked to 2 water insoluble non- polar tails (by a -vely charged phosphate gp). Due to its polar nature , the head of a phospholipid is attracted to
water(it is hydrophilic). The non - polar tail is not attracted to H2O , so it is hydrophobic.
Sphingomyelin is a type of sphingolipid found in animal cell membranes . It also have a polar head & 2 non- polar tails.
