Write a balance equation for the reaction of lithium metal with nitrogen gas. Write out both of the half-reactions being sure to properly assign the oxidation states of each species. Determine the standard cell potential for the redox reaction. Is it spontaneous?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Oxidation half reaction:-

Li(s) ----------> Li+(aq) + 3e- ; E0cell red = -3.05 V

Reduction half reaction:-

N2(g) + 6e- ----------> 2N3-(aq) ; E0cell red = 'x' V

Overall reaction :-

6Li(s) + N2(g) ----------> 2Li3N(aq)   ; E0cell = (x+3.05) V

Oxidation number of N-atom in N2 = 0

Oxidation number of Li-atom in Li(s) = 0

Oxidation number of each Li in Li3N = +1 and that of N = -3

Please Note :- 'x' value ,I m unable to get from the internet.So, if you have the reduction potential table, find the value of 'x' in it and get your answer.

Now, if E0cell (i.e. the value of (x+3.05) of the overall reaction is greater than 0 , reaction is spontaneous.If it is less than 0, reaction is non-spontaneous and if it is zero , the reaction is in equilibrium condition.

1) Why does balancing a redox equation use a different process than balancing other types of chemical equations? Why does balancing a redox equation use a different process than balancing other types of chemical equations? Because redox involves the movement of electrons, we have to make sure the oxidation numbers are the same on both sides of the reaction. Because redox involves the movement of electrons, protons must be added to the appropriate side of the equation. Because redox involves...
