Prove that water evaporation is not spontaneous in 25°C standart!

Homework Answers

Answer #1

For a reaction to be spontaneous ΔG (Gibbs free energy) should be negative and it should releases free energy and moves to a lower.i.e.exothermic, more thermodynamically stable energy state

On the other hand Evaporation is a physical change whereby a liquid substance is changing to its gaseous form.

Evaporation will absorb heat to break the inter-molecular forces. When evaporation absorbs heat, an endothermic process has occured.

Exothermic = Release heat ( Example : Freezing water)
Endothermic = Absorb heat (Example : Evaporation of water)

Also Standard Gibbs free energy of formation of liquid water at 298 K is (-237.17 KJ/mol) and that of water vapour is (-228.57KJ/mol). Therefore,Standard Gibbs free energy of formation of H2O(l)>H2O(g).

Thus the water evaporation is not a spontanetous because the process is endothermic and ΔG is positive (H2O(l)>H2O(g)).

The main source of water vapor to the atmosphere is evaporation. The main sink for water vapor is precipitation. If the total mass of water vapor in the atmosphere is 1.3x1016 kg, and global mean precipitation rate to the Earth’s surface is 0.2 cm/day. What is the mean lifetime of water vapor in the atmosphere? What does this imply for the lifetime of any highly soluble particles or gases in the atmosphere?

Water is supplied to the atmosphere by evaporation from the surface, and leaves the atmosphere via precipitation. The average amount of time a water molecule spends in the atmosphere can be derived by dividing the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere (1.1?1016 ??) by the globally-averaged rate of precipitation to the Earth’s surface of 3.1 ?? ??? −1 . Using these data, calculate how many days, on average, a water molecule spend in the atmosphere before it precipitates out.
