Calculate in kJ/mol the enthalpy of combustion for citric acid using bond energies. Draw out structures to indicate where bonds are breaking/forming.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Enthalpy of combustion of citric acid

2C6H8O7 + 9O2 ---> 12CO2 + 8H2O

From bond enthalpies,

dHreactant = 2[5 x 348 + 5 x 413 + 3 x 799 + 4 x 463] + 9 x 495 = 20563 kJ/mol

dHproducts = 12 x 2 x 799 + 8 x 2 x 463 = 26584 kJ/mol

dHcomb = dHreactant - dHproducts

               = 20563 - 26584

               = -6021 kJ/mol

The structure of citric acid along with O2, CO2 and H2O are shown below
