A gas, composed of a non-reactive mixture of perfect gases, enters a heating chamber at 50 oF, 8 ft/sec and 5.2 lbm/sec. The gas exits the chamber at 180 oF and 15 ft/sec. The gas mixture has the following composition based on mass analysis: 65% Nitrogen, 21% Carbon dioxide, 5% Oxygen and the rest made up of Argon. Calculate the rate at which heat is added to the gas as it moves through the heating chamber.

Methane gas (CH4) at 25 °C is burned steadily with dry air, which enters a combustion chamber of a natural gas boiler in a small power plant at 17 °C. The volumetric analysis of the flue gas on a dry basis is 5.2% carbon dioxide, 0.33% carbon monoxide, 11.24% diatomic oxygen, and 83.23% diatomic nitrogen. The flue gas leaves at 700 K. a) Sketch a fully labelled schematic diagram of the system. b) Write a balanced chemical equation for the...

A fuel gas consists of 75% butane (C4H10), 10% propane (C3H8) and 15% butene (C4H8) by volume. It is to be fed to the combustion chamber in 10% excess air at 25ºC, where it is completely burnt to carbon dioxide and water. The flue gases produced are to be used to generate 5 bar steam from water at 90ºC. (a) Write balanced equations for the combustion of each component of the fuel gas. (b) Explain the need for excess air....
