Why is important to maintain a constant flow rate for the carrier gas in a Gas Chromatography experiment?

Given equal concentrations, will the response of an FID be equal for propanol and ethanol? Explain.

Answer #1

Sol. It is very important to maintain a constant flow rate for the carrier gas because it is the carrier gas which carries the vapours of the injected molecules in machine. Vapours of the injected components have different interaction with stationary phase which is responsible for the separation of the components leads to the different retention time and if flow rate is not constant then separation of the peaks will not be pathetic.

No, response wiill be different for both because response of FID is based on the number of carbons in the molecule and in both of these molecules number of carbon is different.

A few basic gas chromatography questions: In general, how would you determine which of several peaks in a chromatogram obtained for a mouthwash sample might correspond to ethanol? (Is your suggested method 100% reliable?) How would you use that peak to determine how much ethanol is present in the mouthwash? Separations Question It is desired to recover atleast 95% of ethanol from a mixture of ethanol and carbon dioxide (containing 98 % CO2 and 2 % ethanol) by scrubbing the vapor mixture with pure water. Assume equilibrium relation Y = 0.57 X. The gas stream enters the absorption column at 180 kmol/hour (V’) at 120 kPa (P) and 27 °C (T). The carrier gas may be considered insoluble in the solvent and the solvent may be considered nonvolatile. Assume dilute...

In gas chromatography, (a) why do open tubular columns yield greater solute resolution than packed columns? (Check all that apply.) A.Open tubular columns have greater sample capacity. B.Open tubular columns eliminate the multiple path term (A) from the van Deemter equation. C.Open tubular columns have a lower resistance to gas flow, so longer columns can be used without increasing solute retention times. -why can more rapid flow rates be used with H2 and He carrier gases than with N2, without...
