Is Gasoline present in the groundwater???? Explain

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The increasing over the ground water pollution by gasoline leaked from petroleum underground storage tanks of gas stations.

Aromatic hydrocarbons such as BETX compounds( benzene, toulene, xylenes & ethylbenzene) are the most common additives of the gasoline because it is highly volatile, it is found in ground water, volatile organic compounds are a dangerous contaminant of ground water and chlorinated solvents such as vinyl chloride& tetrachloro ethylene.

How many millions of gallons of groundwater could potentially have been contaminated to a level of 15 μg/L of methyl-t-butyl ether (MTBE), the threshold odor concentration, following a spill of 50 gallons of reformulated gasoline containing 12% MTBE (weight basis)? Assume that the density of the reformulated gasoline is 0.80 g/mL and note that there are 3.785 liters in a gallon.

The township of Cremona relies on groundwater for drinking water supplies. While groundwater supplies are plentiful, it has been discovered that concentrations of certain agricultural chemicals are at higher levels than recommended by public heath authorities. The township is considering making several costly investments to improve and protect groundwater quality. The township has conducted a survey of its 100 residents to determine their willingness to pay for investments to improve groundwater quality. It was found that all residents have identical...

Consider an infinite-horizon groundwater management problem where xt is the stock of groundwater at time t, yt is the quantity of groundwater extracted at time t, g(yt) gives the amount of total recharge to the aquifer, B(yt) is the benefit of extracting yt, and C(xt, yt) 2 is the cost of extracting yt from a stock of size xt. Suppose that there are property rights to groundwater, but a large number of users. Groundwater used in agriculture is unregulated. Suppose...

A groundwater containing 10-4 M of Mg2+ is at equilibrium. Use the solubility constant Ksp = 1.35 x 10^-11. Assuming no other ions are present, (a) what is the equilibrium pH, (b) will Mg2+ precipitate if the pH is increased to 12 (show calculations)?

Explain what would happen to either the supply curve, the demand curve, the price of gasoline and the quantity of gasoline traded at equilibrium if the following scenarios occurred. Provide a simple sketch of the appropriate shift in the appropriate curve. If President Sanders (how did he get here into our hypotheticals?) increased pollution controls on the production of gasoline, what would happen in the market for gasoline?

Hardness in groundwater is due to the presence of metal ions, primarily Mg2 and Ca2 . Hardness is generally reported as ppm CaCO3. To measure water hardness, a sample of groundwater is titrated with EDTA, a chelating agent, in the presence of the indicator eriochrome black T, symbolized here as In. Eriochrome black T, a weaker chelating agent than EDTA, is red in the presence of Ca2 and turns blue when Ca2 is removed. Red blue Ca (ln)2+ +EDTA------->Ca EDTA...
