Answer #1

A.

H2SO4(aq) + LiOH(aq) Li2SO4(aq) + H2O(l)

LHS: 3H, 1S, 5O, 1Li
RHS: 2H, 1S, 5O, 2Li

Multiply LioH by 2 and H2O by 2

The Balanced equation is

H2SO4(aq) + 2LiOH(aq) Li2SO4(aq) + 2H2O(l)

LHS: 4H, 1S, 6O, 2Li
RHS: 4H, 1S, 6O, 2Li

B.

Na(s) + O2(g) Na2O(s)

The balanced equation is

4 Na(s) + O2(g) 2Na2O(s)

The reason is simply that there are 2 Na atoms for each O atom, but since you started with 2 oxygens you need to maintain that ratio by multiplying the right side by 2 and that gives you 4 Na atoms.

(C)

NaOH(aq) + FeCl3(aq)   Fe(OH)3(s) + 3NaCl(aq)

The balanced equation is

3NaOH(aq) + FeCl3(aq)   Fe(OH)3(s) + 3NaCl(aq)

Fe(OH)3(s) is the percepitate.

(D)

Na2S (aq) + HCl (aq) NaCl (aq) + H2S(g)

The balanced equation is

Na2S (aq) + 2 HCl (aq) 2 NaCl (aq) + H2S(g)

H2S(g) is the gas

In a generic chemical reaction involving reactants A and B and products C and D, aA+bB→cC+dD, the standard enthalpy ΔH∘rxn of the reaction is given by ΔH∘rxn=cΔH∘f(C)+dΔH∘f(D) −aΔH∘f(A)−bΔH∘f(B) Notice that the stoichiometric coefficients, a, b, c, d, are an important part of this equation. This formula is often generalized as follows, where the first sum on the right-hand side of the equation is a sum over the products and the second sum is over the reactants: ΔH∘rxn=∑productsnΔH∘f−∑reactantsmΔH∘f where m and...
