4 NH3 (g) + 5 O2 (g) ---------> 4 NO (g) + 6 H2O (g)

The rate of the reaction is 0.100 mol/L.s. The rate of the reaction can be defined as rate of disappearance of NH3. The rate of disappearance of NH3 is given as

Rate of reaction = -1/4*(rate of disappearance of NH3)

The ¼ factor comes in because 4 moles of NH3 are consumed in the reaction; the rate of reaction is expressed in terms of appearance of one mole of product. The negative sign indicates that NH3 is consumed. Therefore, we have,

Rate of disappearance of NH3 = -4*(rate of reaction) = -4*(0.100 mol/L.s) = -0.400 mol/L.s (ans).
