Assign each molecule (or object) to the appropriate symmetry point group:

a. cyclopropane

b. a baseball (consider the seams)

c. a baseball bat, without a label

d. 1,4-dichlorobenzene

e. diborane (B2H6)

f. cis-H2O2

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a) . Cyclopropane : point group = D3h

It has one C3 axis , 3 C2 axis and one S3 axis

One h plane and threev planes

b). Baseball : point Group - D2h

It has C2 axis and mirror planes and all 3 axis.

c) a baseball bat (without label): C2v

d) 1,4-dichlorobenzene : point group - D2h

it has three C2 axis and it has three mirror planes(, xy,xz ,yz planes) and one inversion center.

e) . diborane (B2H6) point group - D2h

it has three C2 axis ,three plane of reflection( xy,xz ,yz planes) and inversion center as symmetry elements.

f) cis-H2O2 point group - C2v

It has one C2 axis of symmetry and 2 v plane of reflection
