The water in the gas-collecting apparatus is assumed to be 25C, but is actually 15C. How will this error affect the reported mass of aluminum in the sample?

Answer #1

since Al reacts with a gas to form hydrogen as per the reaction 2Al+ 6HCl ------>2AlCl3+ 3H2

when water is at less temperature, the vapor pressure of water is less. The vapor pressure of water at 15 deg.c is less than that of water at 25 deg.c. This leads to partial pressure of hydrogen being more at lower temperature. Hence moles of hydrogen increases and hence moles of Al also increases. the reported mass of Aluminium at 25 deg.c is less than that at 15 deg.c .

1. When gas is collected over water, the gas is saturated with water vapor with its partial pressure of water vapor dependent on temperature. In the textbook, there is a given saturated water vapor at various temperatures. Use that table to solve the following problem: During the decomposition of KClO3, 92.0mL of gas is collected by the displacement of water at 25.0C. If the atmospheric pressure is 756mmHg, what mass of O2 is collected? 2. (a) if you have a...

An empirical formula is the lowest whole number ratio of the elements in a compound and provides information about the composition of a compound. For instance, the compound sodium sulfate decahydrate has the chemical formula Na2SO4•10H2O. This formula conveys the information that there are ten water molecules per two sodium ions per one sulfate ion. You might wonder: “How were these ratios determined?” To answer the question it is necessary to recognize that the ratio of atoms (or ions) is...
