Part A

Which of the following statements are true?

Select all that apply.

- All other factors being the same, dispersion forces between linear molecules are greater than dispersion forces between molecules whose shapes are nearly spherical.
- For the halogens, the dispersion forces increase while the boiling points decrease as you go down the column in the periodic table from F2 to I2.
- For molecules with similar molecular weights, the dispersion forces become stronger as the molecules become more polarizable.
- The larger the atom, the more polarizable it is.

Answer #1

1. It may be true in case of heteronuclear linear molecule where they have a permanent dipole movement but in case of homonuclear linear molecule its is not true.

2. It is true because as we go down the group atomic size increases and the no of electron increases hence the electron density also increases. As size also increases hence electron are more loosely packed hence easily polarisable.hence dispersive force increases.

3. It is true. Because as molecular weight increases the no of electron increasea i.e electron density increases hence molecule more easily polarisable and hence dispersive force increases.

4.it is true because because as size increases the electrin is less closely bounded to the nucleus hence easily polarisable.

Which of the following statements is true for real gases? Choose all that apply. As molecules increase in size, deviations from ideal behavior become more apparent at relatively low pressures. The volume occupied by the molecules can cause a decrease in pressure compared to the ideal gas. As molecules increase in size, deviations from ideal behavior become more apparent at relatively high pressures. The volume occupied by the molecules can cause an increase in pressure compared to the ideal gas.

Which of the following statements about resonance is/are true? (Select all that apply.) Resonance in a molecule generally indicates less stability. When drawing resonance forms a double-headed arrow is drawn between them. Molecules never exist as any of the individual resonance forms but as a blend of all of them. Sigma bonds can be shifted when considering possible resonance forms. Molecules shift rapidly between resonance forms.
