A molecule with a specific chemical composition elicits the perception of a very unpleasant odor, yet take the same molecule – same chemical composition – and fold it now elicits the perception of a pleasant odor. Explain how this is possible.
Some compounds has same chemical formula , that is same chemical composition but there arrangement of atomss/ group are different. Due to this different arrangement, there properties are altered. Such a compouns are called as isomers & property called as isomerism. The isomers are like Cis-Trans, E-Z, (+)-(-), D - L etc which shows different properties. & due to this arraogement there odoure are also different. Eg. Isomers of Carvone.
1) D- carvone ( Structure provided in image )
2) L- Carvone
The odour of D-isomer is mint like while that of L-isomers is like caraway ( cake) This is due to only different arrangement og groups.
