Problem 6.

Consider that a figurine's mass is 2.5 * 10^-7% gold and 1.4% of the mass of it is made up of copper. Figure out how many grams there are of gold and copper in a figurine that weighs 205 pounds.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution

Given, % mass of gold = 2.5 x 10-7 % ,  % mass of copper = 1.4 % , mass of figurine = 205 lb

to find the mass of gold,

% mass = mass of gold/ mass of figurine x 100%

=> 2.5 x 10-7 % = mass of gold / 205 lb x 100%

=> mass of gold = 2.5 x 10-7 % x 205 lb / 100% = 5.125 x 10-7 lb = 5.125 x 10-7 x 453.592 g = 2324.659 x 10-7 g

( 1 pound = 453.592 g )

to find the mass of copper

% mass = mass of copper/ mass of figurine x 100%

=> 1.4 % = mass of copper / 205 lb x 100%

=> mass of gold = 1.4 % x 205 lb / 100% = 2.87 lb = 2.87 x 453.592 g = 1301.809g

   ( 1 pound = 453.592 g )
