Periodic secondary structure would accommodate large stretches of bulky R-groups (trp and tyr) because s are stabilised by interchain hydrogen bonds. The differs significantly from an in that the polypeptide chain (called a b-strand) in a is in an extended conformation rather than densely coiled. A range of extended structures are sterically allowed. The distance between adjacent amino acids along a b-strand is approximately 3.5Å in contrast to the 1.5Å in a helix. A is formed by linking two or more b-strands by hydrogen bonds and two orientations of adjacent strands are possible in a b-sheet. Adjacent chains can be orientated in opposite directions (anti-parallel ) or in the same direction (parallel ).
